Letter From The President
As we approach the holiday season, we have a great deal for which to be thankful. I speak for the wolves here as well, since none of them are very good at typing, in saying that our greatest blessing is you. We have weathered a year of this economic downturn together, knowing that everyone is feeling its sting. Through all of this hardship, your compassion for the wolves at the Sanctuary has continued. From all of us, we wish to personally say “thank you” with a deep feeling of gratitude for keeping the wolves in your thoughts.
We know of 4 animal sanctuaries in the United States who have had to close their doors this year. Although we were not able to accept any of those animals, due to our imposed limitations, we did help with the efforts to find those individuals new homes. The way each of us views our finances has changed, and in turn the way people give has changed as well. Wolf is honored to still be around.
Thankfulness also comes from the family at the Sanctuary becoming whole once again. Through two very painful losses, we have been able to bring Sky and Lakota home once again. It is a bittersweet happiness, but having a sense of finality with everyone finally being here at the Sanctuary has been a blessing.
Thank you to each and every one of you who donated for Shaman’s surgery. With his unexpected loss, those donations have been shifted to our previously depleted emergency medical fund. The Sanctuary now sits with a guardedly reasonable resource for emergency medical care for the wolves.
As we enter this holiday season we are optimistic. This is the giving season, it is when a majority of folks engage in their charitable donations for the year. A large portion of Wolf’s operating budget comes in over this short time period, these are donations that take care of the animals all year long. Please remember the Sanctuary this year. Please consider a gift membership for a friend or loved one. Tell someone about your personal support for Wolf and what we do. Show them our web site or have us send them information.
Gratefully Yours,
Frank Wendland

Unfortunately before our last newsletter even made it to the post office, events were occurring. Shaman passed away on Sep. 27th (click - Shaman Dealing With Loss). Just three days later we were saying goodbye to Gina (click - In Memory of Gina). Another three days after that we were moving Sky and Lakota back to the Sanctuary (click - Sky & Lakota). Only four days after that we were taking one of our fostered animals in for surgery to remove a mast cell tumor from her snout.
Noel went in for the surgery on October 7th and did great with the entire affair. Unfortunately the surgeon was unable to get clean margins. The conventional prognosis is not great, but she has an outstanding spirit and we are treating her with positive intentions and supplements.

On October 8th we received our first real snow (about 10”) of the season. On October 10th the snow began to send a message with 8 more inches.
On October 17th we received the outstanding efforts of some of the Fossil Creek High School seniors who chose Wolf for their class project. They did a great job of reducing a significant amount of the slash accumulated during our forest thinning. Our special thanks to Shelby Dean for organizing this event.
From October 28th through the 30th we received an incredible 38” of snow. This made October the snowiest October on record. Although the animals love the snow, it does make it somewhat more complicated for the humans involved. Not only does it mean a lot more work, but it also prevents a number of our volunteers from coming up to help with that work.

As the snow began accumulating on Wednesday there was actually a volunteer on-site. By the time the volunteer left it took over 2 hours to get him up the 2.25 miles to the county road. As this article is being written, it is again snowing.
In general everyone else is doing great and the animals love the snow. Thank you again for your support and have a fabulous Holiday Season!
