And The Lessons Which Can Be Learned
“The gaze of the wolf
reaches into our souls.”
Barry
Lopez – Of Wolves and Men
The
Stories contained in this section are recounted, to the best of our knowledge,
about the individual animals. Many of them, we believe, have been
mistreated to some degree, due to ignorance on the part of otherwise well-intentioned
humans. When we surmise specific treatment or trauma of an animal,
we have chosen not to inject our beliefs into their stories. We
also have left out some of the champions who have been instrumental in
saving many of the animals at the Sanctuary. This was due to their
wishes to not be recognized. Likewise, when we have no clue on the ages of the animals rescued or their birthdays we give them birthdates that are interspersed throughout the year, even though most pure wolves will only be born in the spring months. We have identified these estimated dates with the "~" symbol.
Ultimately,
all of the animals at the Sanctuary are here because of human failings.
When humans do not understand or take into account the nature of the animal,
the animal suffers.
When humans are not willing or able to accommodate
those needs, the animal suffers.
Wolf
believes that these animals are sentient beings, with spirits and souls
that make their lives and feelings important. We do not believe
that they are disposable commodities, or property to be used and discarded
at the whim of their guardians.
Additionally,
Wolf does not specify reported percentages
in the mix of animals between wolf and dog. In most cases, we believe
that the numbers given to owners were either incorrect, or later misstated.
The bottom line with genetic mixing makes those numbers irrelevant, anyway.
